Christmas at Summer Place

Every year my parents do something special at Christmastime with three of their grandchildren. These happen to be the nieces I talk about quite often. My other niece and nephew are older and on their own. Anyway, Dad couldn't go this year because of his knee replacement surgery, so Mom and I took the girls to "Summer Place." Summer Place is a private town in the back yard of a family home and they hold special events. In the summer they have a car show, and in the winter they have dinner and a movie. Their back yard is a replica of an entire town dated back in the 30's, 40's 50's??? I remember a lot of this kind of stuff as a child and I was born in 1958. (52 years old for those of you who are doing the math!)

We had hamburgers, french fries, coke and banana split at this diner.

The walls are covered with nostalgia

This 'theater' is called the Isis. It was the name of the theater in downtown Kokomo that I went to as a child. This is probably the original sign.
The walls inside the theater are covered with nostalgia too.

FREE popcorn (well it came with the ticket, but we didn't have to pay 7.50 extra for small popcorn and coke!)

Look familiar anyone? Back in the day, the youngest child was the "tv changer." In our house it was a constant struggle until my sister came along!!!

After dinner at the diner, we saw "Miracle on 34th Street."
It was a wonderful evening. After the movie we went by this house in Kokomo (across from Albright Cemetery) that has the most beautiful light display. You turn your radio on 90.5 when you get there and the Christmas lights "dance" to the music. It is awesome.
Merry Christmas
Cindy

  1. Cindy, this little town replica is amazing. What a cool idea. They must have a huge place? Is it open year round or just the two times a year? What a wonderful evening with your mom and nieces. I love that movie too--one of my favorites :)

  3. Good morning Verde and Vintage! Summer Place is on 19, between Kokomo and Tipton. They have a nice size back yard and it's in the country. I don't think it's open all the time. The last I knew, the people that live there have other jobs and this is more of a passion for them. I know they have the car show and the Christmas event and you have to buy advance tickets for the Christmas event since seating is limited. I signed up to be on their e-mail list, so whenever I get notification of an event, I will put it on my blog. Cindy

  4. Cindy, I've never heard of such a thing. How cool is that?? What a fun time. It feels so familiar to see those pics of all the things we remember from our childhoods. Like that TV! I love that era. Do I understand it correctly? It's a family's display/attraction? Wow!
