Let's talk about the weather....and bees.

We still have a day or two left of March and this is what has already come to pass.

The Magnolias, along with many other trees and shrubs, have already bloomed.

Forsythia

As did our April/May blooming bulbs.

And they're done.

My Shug even dug up some lilac bush starts and replanted them.

Beautiful huh?

I heard the reason the blooms didn't last, was that it was too hot for them. Makes sense really. Our April/May weather is usually in the 60's and maybe 70's. It's March, and it's already been in the 80's. Too hot for our cool weather blooming plants. So their flower was short lived.

I hope you got a glimpse of it while it did last though.

You know me if you've been following my blog for any time at all. I'm a warm weather kind of gal. I don't like to be cold. I don't like putting on the boots, hats, mittens, scarves, coats, just to run to the store. Oh cold weather and snow is OK from December 1 to December 30, but come New Years Eve, I'm over it! So this winter was perfect for me. HOWEVER...and herein lies the problem(s).

The fruit trees are blooming. Fruit trees need bees to pollinate them. Bees won't come out during cooler temps. They want warm weather to come out. And they've been out because it's been warm. But our frost free date is May 10. We still have six weeks to go. We've had snow storms before in March. I mean, it usually does snow in March. And we have frost until May 10! So, if we get a frost, the blooms will die and we won't have fruit, and if it doesn't stay warm, the bees will stay in and not pollinate the plants. So I'm hoping for 70 temps from now until December 1! This is a weird weather year for sure.

  2. Yep - the weather has been similarly weird here too, but it has just cooled down today and looks like we'll have real spring temps for the next week or so. Our forsythia came out last week and we're not quite as far along with the magnolias as you, so maybe the cooler weather might make them last a bit longer for us.

  3. I am totally with you, I loved this winter and if every winter was like this one I would be happy with it. I don't mind winter in Nov and Dec and even Jan but then quit already! I cannot ever remember my lilacs blooming with my tulips, forsythia and magnolia tree! So weird... I am going to stay with the notion that it is going to be nice from now on :)
    Blessings today

  4. Cindy, I am afraid what might happen with the trees and bees. It has been the warmest spring ever and now it's chilly somewhat today. I hope your bees make it . I am praying my lilac starts that I got from my mother's lilac bush will bloom this year. Smiles, xo, Susie(She Junks)

  5. Well the farmers are stressing here in Michigan. It has been freezing in our northern counties for a few days now. We had sleet and then snow. I expect our Cherry trees are ruined yet again this year. We will see. And our rhubarb had came up quickly when it got warm do not know how it does coming up so early. Hope you had a great week!
