Beautiful, Fragrant, Spring!

We have had the most beautiful and fragrant spring. When we came home from vacation and went into our back yard, it smelled heavenly. Several lilac bushes are blooming and they are FULL!
The snowball bush (viburnum) is full.

The bleeding heart plant is huge.

My hubby brought these lilacs home for me. They are a bold purple color and he got them from a farm house yard. The farm house is getting ready to be torn down to make way for a new by-pass. So sad. Anyone remember the song by Joni Mitchell? They paved paradise and put up a parking lot....ewwww...laaaaa laaaaa laaaaaa....(sorry, not a good singer)
I found this guy just hanging around in the lilacs doing nothing! How do I know it's a guy? Well, that's what male bees do. They hang around, and their sole purpose in life is to mate with the queen. That's it. They don't work, they don't even feed themselves, and come winter, the female (worker bees) throw them out of the hive! I'm serious.
Well, being the female that I am, I gotta get busy! Have a great weekend.

  1. Such pretty blooms you have. Only a little bit going on here so far. I cannot wait for things to wake up. Did work in one bed this week and it looks like all my sedums that I planted last summer have made it through their first winter. Its raining here though this weekend so I am sewing instead of gardening. Bee came yesterday! I am hoping to post about Miss bee tomorrow after church. Hope you are having a great weekend!

  2. Hi there Cindy! I popped over from Brenda's blog after seeing your little bee doll. Too cute! I'm a new beekeeper, so I thought I'd stop by and say 'howdy'.

  4. Cindy,
I am so impressed that you captured not one but two swarms, that is so great and saves you the cost of more bees and a queen. DOn't you think when they swarm the queen is stronger than one you buy and replace in the hive? I can't wait till I can start my hives again! Thank you for the comments of my Lowe's flowers, I am so excited!

  5. Hi mrs. c,
The swarms were from my own hives that made it through the winter, and I think if they made it through the winter we had, then they are strong. I have had luck with both, and bad luck with both (splits and swarms) so I don't know which is better. I guess if you have enough hives, it's all good! I prefer not having to buy bees, I do know that! Cindy
