It's about drugs really....

Cousins, Sister & Mom

Cousins

 Cousins

Cousins (& Mom!)

 Family

When I was growing up, my cousins were my friends.  Our parents got together every weekend and played cards.  We weren't allowed around the table, so we played in the other room.  Now, as older cousins, we still see each other, we are friends, face book friends, some of us travel together, we do what we can to stay in touch.
I THINK ....if I figured correctly, there are 23 first cousins that came from 7 brothers and sisters. (and spouses of course) And I couldn't even count the second and third cousins, or all the spouses. I don't even know them all.

When Vickie and I got home, it was late Saturday evening.  We found out that one of our cousins lost her son.  She was the youngest cousin of nine children, in one family. We are not close, I am friends with her sister more than I am her. I did not know her son.  But, she is still my cousin.  I am hesitant to print this story, because it's private, I'm not sure of all the details,  but it seems to be a problem and it scares me.
It's about drugs.
Oddly enough, my sister and I just had a conversation about drugs.  She is concerned because the school her daughter will be attending had a drug bust.  Middle school age kids... drug bust!

My cousin's son (my 2nd cousin) looked like the all American kid.  He was a cub, boy, and eagle scout.  I don't know if he had a drug problem, if he over-dosed, or if he just took a bad drug.  It doesn't matter.  He died from drugs.  His Mother walked in the bathroom, saw that he was having a seizure, called 911, and gave him mouth-to-mouth resuscitation. He died in ER. That is the story I heard.
Very sad.
He died from a drug. (rumor is heroin)
22 years old.

My sister was telling me that heroin appears to be the drug of choice for these kids.  Apparently, it's cheap.  I saw on the news a couple of days ago an 18 year old died, in a nearby town, from a 'bad' synthetic drug.
I think about kids and how they think they are invincible.
How they think things happen to everyone else, but not to them.
How they think it won't hurt if they try it just one time.
Peer pressure.
What can you do?
 How do you convince them....
that yes... it can and does, happen to them.

  3. I'm sorry to read this Cindy, sadly I have no idea how to convince young people they aren't invincible. I guess we just have to keep telling them that they are more important than drugs...that their lives and choices matter.

  5. Cindy, It breaks my heart for your cousin, for your family. I heard on the news, heroin is easier to get and cheaper to get than a six pack of beer.....to bad kids can't just get high on life, to go to dances, ball games, out for pizza with friends. So sad. I am sending condolences , xoxo,Susie

  6. This cousin she speaks of is My Nephew::::I have to agree with what SHE SAYS and the others that replied . OHH if we could only convince these children of the future that "drugs" is not the answer!! IT is family time, friend time and being true to yourself. I fear for so many young children growing up. What can we do but spread the word::::"drugs are evil"

  7. Thanks everyone for your comments. I had a chat with one of my nieces yesterday. Told her about this situation and how she is going to be getting offers for all kinds of bad stuff....and how I want her to hear my voice in her head every time someone offers her something bad! We just need to pray, pray and pray some more.

  8. My sincere condolences to your cousin Cindy. I keep telling my youngest son about the dangers but he still thinks he is invincible. As you say, drugs are everywhere and they are cheap. We don't give him money but he still manages to get cannabis. I worry all the time about the what ifs and what nexts, and it breaks my heart. I know he has to learn from his own mistakes so all I can do is love him. Philippa xx
